Our PE Curriculum

Curriculum Intent

Our curriculum aims to improve the quality and breadth of PE and Sport participation and achievement across the whole school.  It provides new opportunities and activities, ensuring we allow all children as many chances as possible to develop healthy lifestyle choices, have ambition to reach their potential, learn new life skills and build their teamwork and leadership skills.  Through this programme, we will see not only an increase in active participation, but an enjoyment of a wider range of sport and physical education through a range of activities and learning experiences.

Curriculum Progression and Implementation

Our curriculum is supported by JB Sports Coaching, who work alongside our staff to provide high quality specialist P.E lessons. We actively promote Swimming and Water Safety for all our children. Our children, from Year 1 to Year 6, go swimming through out the academic year from pre-school to Year 6. We actively take part in competitive sports with a JB sports competition package which includes competitions for all ages and in a variety of sports. Our PE curriculum supports Teamwork and Resilience as part of our school values.

What does a PE lesson at Great Steeping look like?

A PE lesson at Great Steeping contains the following elements:

Flashback: this involves revisiting previous knowledge and skills to secure recall of physical activity facts and practical skills.

Learning Question and related success criteria – our PE curriculum is broken down into small steps. Each step is introduced at the start of a lesson. The success criteria is ameasure of how well the learning question has been answered.

Learning: this might include teacher-led, questioning and discussion and / or independent activity and group work where children have the opportunity to practise applying their knowledge and skills. Teachers may stop the class to address misconceptions during learning time or show how knowledge and skills can be applied in different contexts.

Plenary: to review progress and consolidate learning

The order and amount of time spent on these different aspects of the lesson will vary dependent on the lesson’s place in the sequence of learning and teacher assessment.
